The Pan African movement has issued a statement strongly condemning the Ghanaian government's handling of galamsey (illegal mining) protests, which resulted in the unlawful arrest and detention of 53 citizens.
The movement also denounces the government's prioritization of powerful interests over citizens' rights to a safe environment and demands immediate release of the detained protesters.

We are currently organizing logistics to ensure all participants are well-prepared and safe during the demonstration.

As Day 2 of the protest comes to a close, we successfully presented our second petition to representatives from the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources at the Accra Sports Stadium. 

The petition calls for immediate action to #StopGalamseyNow and #FreeTheCitizens. This follows the first petition submitted to the IGP and Attorney General over the illegal arrest and detention of our comrades.

Galamsey is a self inflicted death sentence and we must stop it from wiping away our generations.

It is our prayer that all celebrities, opinion leaders, and well-meaning Ghanaians join the call.

We are back at the same location with the same people and the same agenda, but today there’s fresh energy in the air. 

The route remains unchanged, but the crowd has grown, bringing more power and pressure to ensure our message is heard. 

As we kick off Day 2 of the #StopGalamseyNow and #FreeTheCitizens demonstration, the movement is gaining momentum, and the call for action is louder than ever.

In a meeting with leaders of Organised Labour, President Akufo-Addo has appealed for more time to effectively tackle the ongoing Galamsey menace. He acknowledged the severity of the issue but emphasized the complexity of the challenge, asking for patience as his government works on long-term solutions.

However, we are calling for swift and efficient implementation of measures and the prosecution of those involved in illegal mining. The longer we wait, the more damage is done, and the consequences become even more severe for our communities and environment.

As we kick off the second day of the protest, the momentum is building. The crowd is united in its demand to address the illegal disappearances and to free citizens being unlawfully detained. Protesters are gathering peacefully, determined to bring attention to these injustices and push for immediate action.

Today, the police outnumbered us, but we still made them feel our presence. Tomorrow, we will match their numbers, and by Saturday, they will see that we have the numbers!

Madina MP Francis-Xavier Sosu has taken the Inspector General of Police (IGP) and the Attorney General (AG) to the Human Rights Court over the violation of the rights of 32 protesters. The case arises from the unlawful arrests and excessive force used during a recent demonstration, where the protesters’ fundamental human rights were blatantly infringed. Sosu, a human rights lawyer, is demanding justice for the affected individuals through the court.

We must unite to fight the oppressors and win the battle against illegal mining.

Day 1 of the #FreeTheCitizens and #StopGalamseyNow demonstration was peaceful. A petition was submitted to the Office of the Attorney General, despite his absence.
